Nigel Lake, CEO and co-founder of Atomli
I'm an entrepreneur with a passion for diversity, innovation, environment and action and a background in science, finance and philosophy. I've founded companies, and worked with inventors, entrepreneurs, academics and start-ups in technology, digital media, energy, financial services, healthcare, medical devices, professional services and a variety of other industries.
I believe there is almost always a better way to do things. I have lived and worked in most of the world's top thirty economies, and have advised hundreds of major companies and governments on major M&A transactions, strategic transformations, large infrastructure projects and the application of big data analytics to boardroom decisions. I'm thrilled to be part of the Atomli team, bringing the cutting edge of Wall St sophistication to prescriptive analytics for consumer and packaged goods companies and retailers.
My career has been built around the combination of systems thinking, conceptual frameworks, robust financial and statistical analysis, and clear strategic vision. My core strength is that of a navigator. I have an exceptional track record in helping to solve the most complex problems, and for applying new analytical techniques and thinking to understand and reduce risk.
Throughout my career, I have been involved in the development of innovative approaches that bring a better understanding of value and a clearer appreciation of risk. This includes the development of a statistically robust approach to the valuation of companies and projects that substantially de-risks major investment decisions. The conceptual background to this thinking is laid out in my book The Long Term Starts Tomorrrow, which argues that long term thinking is the only reliable way to create value in a short term world.
Through my career I've been involved with many aspects of founding, building and realising value from business, as an entrepreneur, business leader, team member and advisor. These include tiny start-ups and IP rich businesses to some of the largest companies in the world.
I was born in Colombia, grew up in the Middle East and the UK, and have been based at various times in London, Tokyo, Sydney and the United States. My experience covers all major industry sectors and encompasses hundreds of M&A transactions, infrastructure projects, strategy assignments and financings with a combined value of some $500 billion. The vast majority of these have created true value for my clients. I am expert at navigating the complexities of cross-border, cross-cultural negotiation, and am at home in many cities and cultures.
Creating long term value in a short term world
My recent book "The Long Term Starts Tomorrow", explores how you can make short term decisions that are better able to stand the test of time. Click here for more...
In the words of Mike Baird, State Premier of NSW and one of Australia's most respected politicians: "Whether in Government or business, the daily challenge is how to deal with the short term crisis whilst balancing long term needs? Nigel Lake provides a clear framework to address this challenge whilst also detailing the need to change to survive on any journey. Change involves risk however it also may be the very reason that you remain in your job. A must for any manager, leader or Minister - compelling reading."
